Advancements with Digital Impressions

If you’ve ever had putty-like alginate impressions taken of your teeth, you know how many things could go wrong: the putty doesn’t set long enough in your mouth, or does not get placed securely enough, not to mention the awful feeling that you might choke. And if the impression is not clean or accurate the first time, you may have to come in and do it all over again (no thank you!). At Southeast Orthodontics we are proud to possess cutting-edge technology that does away with all this fuss.

Digital oral impressions use 3D scanners to map not just a patient’s teeth, but the whole arch of the mouth, including the palate and gums. Impressions are captured by gliding a hand-held light-weight wand over the patient’s teeth, which generates a live 3D image on a screen in front of patient and doctor. These crystal-clear images are invaluable in the creation of custom appliances--they ensure a perfect fit upon delivery. We use digital impressions exclusively for all of our patients treated at Southeast Orthodontics.

The results of a digital impression can be attached to a prescription and electronically sent to a lab, removing the need to physically mail bulky molds that may not be entirely accurate. Greater efficiency in the clinic, increased comfort for the patient, and better-quality appliances--what’s not to love?

In our office, we use the 3Shape Trios 3 color Scanner, which:

  • Measures for all our custom-fit appliances (like braces, retainers, clear aligners, and expanders)
  • Provides digital work-ups for orthognathic surgery
  • Generates pre-treatment work-ups to show what your teeth will look like after treatment
  • Allows patients to sit back, relax, and be out in no time!

Digital impressions also allow your doctor to simulate treatment options, which is a powerful tool in complex surgical cases. The ability to see what a mouth would look like or how a set of teeth would behave if one was removed or re-built is revolutionary in the field of orthodontics.

This technology vastly improves the patient experience, and could very well be considered a treatment game-changer. And what better place to experience the future of dental health than at Southeast Orthodontics? Ask one of our knowledgeable team members for more information at your next visit!
